Protein and Eating Disorder Recovery: What You Need to Know

Protein often gets positioned as the “safe” macronutrient. High-protein diets are praised in diet culture. But in recovery, protein needs to be understood and included in a balanced way, not isolation.

Protein Supports Repair and Stabilisation

Protein is essential for:

  • Muscle repair

  • Immune function

  • Enzyme production

  • Hair and skin health

After periods of restriction, adequate protein helps rebuild and restore the body.

More Protein Is Not Always Better

Some individuals use protein as a way to avoid carbohydrates or fats. This can maintain restriction under the guise of “health.”

True recovery means including all macronutrients, not over-prioritising one to compensate for fear of another.

Balanced meals that include carbohydrates, fats, and protein together are more stabilising than protein alone.

Protein supports recovery. But it works best when it’s not replacing other nutrients.
